4 hours. World Music is an exploration of Non-Western European music. It is an introduction to the study of "ethnomusicology" and the role of music in society at large and a broad-ranging view of how this role is fulfilled in a variety of cultures. The course will focus on the indigenous cultures and music of Native America, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, India, Indonesia and East Asia (Japan and Korea). Student projects will explore the popular music of one or more of these areas. (C)
