This advanced course examines the social construction of childhood. Topics include but are not limited to socio-historical study of the evolution of childhood, the child in art and literature, socialization and gender as process, structured inequality and children's life chances, cross-cultural comparisons of childhood, and U.S. family policies for the welfare of children. An applied component allows students to integrate theory and observations of the day to day life of children. Prerequisite: SOC 210E/Wwith C or better or permission of instructor. Cr 3.
