Astudy of the formation of the German Empire, the rise of a powerful industrial state, Weltpolitik and defeat in World War I, the Weimar Republic, Nazism and the Third Reich, Germany in World War II, and the partition of Germany in 1945. The course analyzes nationalism and examines cultural, social, and economic factors which help clarify Germany's role in the modern world. Prerequisite: junior or senior status. Cr 3.
