Asurvey of the political, social, economic, and cultural history of the peoples of Russia to the midnineteenth century. The course covers geographical factors, the nature of Byzantine influence, the impact of invasions, and Russia's contacts with the West. Contrasts between the experiences of Russia and Western Europe are stressed; contrasts with other civilizations are also noted. Prerequisite: HTY 101I or HTY102I, or permission. Cr 3.
