The course takes the French Revolution as a climax of major intellectual, political, and social trends in eighteenth-century Europe. Thorough coverage is given to the Old Regime, the Enlightenment and the influence of the American Revolution. There is indepth analysis of the coming, course and outcome of the French Revolution itself, and its impact outside France. The Napoleonic era is handled as the culminating phase of the revolution and as a major influence on nineteenth-century Europe. Prerequisite: HTY 102I or permission. Cr 3.
