This course focuses upon the efforts of women writers in the early modern period to create, negotiate, and contest the terms of a developing literary culture. Depending on content, which varies, ENG 379 may also satisfy the Renaissance or nineteenth-century category requirement. In all cases, instructors will attend to the successes and limitations of gender as a category of analysis.
