This course will study various types of novels (such as the realist novel, the social protest novel, the modernist novel, the Gothic novel, and the autobiographical novel) with attention to social and historical contexts and to thematic connections between texts. It is not purely a survey of "Great American Novels," butmay include both canonical and non-canonical writers. Critical and theoretical texts may accompany literary readings. 2-year cycle, fall.
