The course will introduce students to the many ways of thinking about rhetoric throughout history and stress the value of rhetorical criticism in analyzing texts, discourse, and language. Topics will vary, but may survey theories of rhetoric from Plato and Aristotle to Campbell and Nietzsche or examine contemporary theoretical approaches to rhetoric, ranging from the neo-Aristotelian, dramaturgical, experiential and sociolinguistic to the postmodern.
