This course is an advanced study in microbiology dealing with the use of microorganizms to mineralize, detoxify and degrade environmental contaminants. This course will study the mechanisms and processes by which microorganisms are involved in the treatment of sewage, identification of waterborne microbial diseases and the process of water purification which prevents the spread of these diseases. The course will investiage the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. Laboratory exercises will enable students to become familiar with and to use standard tests for the analysis of water and wastewater and the biodegradation of environmental pollutants. Prerequisite(s): BIO 1404, 1304, 2314, 2263, CHEM 1103, 3303.
