Prerequisites: admission to early childhood education program and completion of the Children in Groups semester. This course parallels Literacy II, but addresses the needs of children at a higher literacy level. Literacy III focuses on the foundations of early and fluent stages of literacy in a natural learning environment for second grade through fourth grade children. Emphasis will be given to learning to teach through the components of a comprehensive literacy program with special attention placed on designing and managing literate environments, appropriate book selection, word building activities to promote visual processing strategies, comprehension development, and using observational assessment strategies to guide instruction. Three credit hours.
