Prerequisites: admission to early childhood education program and completion of the Introduction to the Profession semester. Literacy I focuses on the foundations of emergent and early literacy in a natural learning environment for preschool through early primary. Emphasis will be given to learning to teach through the components of a balanced literacy program with special attention placed on designing and managing literate environments, appropriate book selection, language development activities, and using observational assessment strategies to guide instruction. Three credit hours.
