This course provides an introduction to basic principles of early literacy instruction in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, including theoretical bases for literacy instruction in grades K-2, methods of instruction and organization, the major components of primary grade reading instruction, developmentally appropriate strategies and materials, and assessment of children's literacy needs. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program or permission of the chair. Intensive field experience in an assigned public school required.
