Geologic evolution of the West, from its most ancient beginnings to modern processes that are still shaping it. The course offers oppor-tunities to practice field and lab techniques for hand-sample identifi-cation of rocks and minerals, use maps and field observations to recognize geologic structures, and observe geomorphic processes shaping the Western landscape. Students successfully completing the course will demonstrate an integrated understanding of the topic in field activities, small group work, labs, exams, and short written and oral research presentations. Includes half-day and/or weekend field trips and possibly a field trip to one of the West's National Parks. May have a service-learning component. $100 Course Fee. Prereq: GEOL 101 or GEOL 150. (fall/even-numbered years)
