This intense, inquiry-based course will explore the mechanisms underlying the central dogma of molecular biology in close detail. Special attention will be given to gene regulation at the transcriptional, translational, and post-translational levels as well as to mechanisms of signal transduction. In addition, a unit of the course will discuss the field of genomics as it relates to identifying and understanding specific regions of DNA sequence. The laboratory portion of this course will allow students to use their own research projects to learn techniques such as DNA isolation, gene cloning, agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR, restriction enzyme analysis, and many more. Lab included. $35 Course Fee. Prereq: BIO 255 and CHEM 331, or c/i. (spring/even-numbered years)
