The study and analysis of 20th and 21st Century art music, its major trends, composers, and compositional devices. Begins with traditional tonality, continues with Neo- Classicism, atonal and serial works, electronic and avant garde styles, and post-minimalism. Also examines the importance of jazz, and accomplishments of African-Americans, and women composers. Keeps abreast of current developments in 21st Century music. Music forms to be studied include symphony, string quartet, opera, performance art, and film scores. Two lectures. Required of Music Education and Liberal Arts majors. Prerequisite: MUSC 2212.
