A study of the chemical and physical properties and biological functions of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. Topics include cell membranes, enzyme kinetics and mechanisms, replication, transcription, and translation. Prerequisites: CHEM 2010, 2011. Laboratory component emphasizes ionization of acids and bases, pH and buffers, important biochemical techniques, and the chemistry of the major classes of biological compounds. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. Offered in fall, spring, and summer.
