Description:

What is the connection between democracy and international politics? Would a more democratic world be a more peaceful world? Are democracies inherently more peaceful than nondemocracies? This course examines the concept of the democratic peace, beginning with Kant's notion of the democratic pacific union. We then examine major contemporary works on democratic peace theory, arguments modifying our understanding of the democratic peace, and important critiques of this concept. Prerequisites: PLSC 140.
