This course will be offered in Siena, Italy. After a brief examination of the Etruscan and Roman origins of Italian cities, the course will focus on the rebirth of Italian cities in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries and their history until the middle of the 16th century when for all practical purposes the era of the independent city-states had ended. Students will examine the political, social, economic, religious, and cultural history of Italian citystates, particularly those in Tuscany with a special emphasis on Siena.
