A developmental approach, including concepts in speech sound development and phonology, is applied to the study of phonetics found in the English language, American regional speech, foreign dialect, and aberrant speech. Students also obtain a working understanding of the analysis of distinctive features of speech sounds through practice in traditional transcription using international phonetic alphabet.
