Description:

This course examines the legacy of the colonial experience and the development of Creole cultures in the New World. It addresses issues that affect the African Diaspora such as the meaning of blackness; nationalist movements; the significance of religion and language as markers of ethnic identity; and the effect of globalization. Readings, discussions, and films underscore that politics of race and ethnicity as well as the discourse on culture and identity shape and influence social relations in these diverse societies.
