This course focuses on the structural analysis of language, with special emphasis on the techniques of descriptive linguistics, transformational grammar, and historical linguistics. Major topics include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Skills are trained in sound transcription, phonemics, morphemics, and syntactic derivation for cross-linguistic comparison. Prerequisites: ANTH 120 or permission of instructor.
