A survey of the evolution of clothing styles through history with an emphasis on Western costume. Study of historical costume as it reflects sociological, psychological, economic, political, artistic, technological, and other factors. Among the topics discussed in the class are the ways in which social rank, ethnicity, and gender manifest themselves through clothing and adornment, and how the historic evolution of clothing reflects changing roles of women and various historically marginalized groups.
