3 hours. The teacher candidate will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to meet the literacy needs of students in their content classrooms. Addresses the need for literacy instruction at the middle and secondary levels; the process of reading to learn and the comprehension demands of subject matter classrooms; textbook evaluation; informal and formal assessment and evaluation of the students' reading skills; the accommodation of individual differences; and types of reading programs at middle/secondary levels. May be taken for honors. Prerequisite: Junior standing, grade of "C" or better in CURIN 261 Explorations in Education, BSEd or BME degreedeclared, minimum 2.5000 cumulative GPA, admission to Teacher Education, or permission of Teacher Education office and instructor.
