Major theoretical systems, theorists, and theoretical controversies in contemporary sociology, with attention to problems of theory construction and the relationship between theory and research. Emphasis of functionalism, systems theory, conflict theory, symbolic interaction, and introduction to phenomenology, and ethno-methodology and integrative theories. Prerequisite: SOC 570 History of Sociological Thought or equivalent or permission of instructor. May be taken for honors.
