This course is designed to provide an overview of current issues with an exploration of non-traditional career paths for the oral healthcare professional. It will cover topics ranging from the changing role of the dental hygienist in alternative practice opportunities, including trends in population demographics and self-regulation/independent practice. Relevant aspects of the political and economic influences of managed care and its impact on the profession of dental hygiene are reviewed. Students will become familiar with ethical considerations inherent to the professional code of ethics and standards for dental hygiene.
