3 cl hrs, 3 lab hrs, 4 cr This course offers a study of the physical principles of lasers and photonics. It starts with an overview of geometrical and physical optics, and introduces students to concepts and processes of an important part of modern physics including optical coherence, stimulated emission, laser oscillation, quantum optics, principles of fiber optics, and photonics. The laboratory component of this course offers students extensive hands-on practice and exposure to modern equipment and technologies in photonics. Pre- or corequisite: PHYS 1434 or PHYS 1442
