3 hours credit This course is an analytical, historical, and theoretical introduction to the study of popular culture. The course will stress critical and normative interpretations of popular culture in the organization and representation of social life, especially the relations of dominance and subordination in the production and consumption of cultural commodities. In addition to exploring recent debates within popular culture studies, this course examines the global implications of mass culture as a mean s of cultural homogenization and social control. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisite: SOCI 1113.
