An advanced treatment of the structure of matter. Physical and mechanical properties of materials including metals, alloys, ceramics, insulating materials, semiconductors, super semiconductors, polymers and composites based on detailed theoretical understanding of material microstructures. Discussions of Equilibrium diagrams, processing approaches, material selection based on thermodynamic and kinetic arguments. Degradation and failure, fitness for purpose. 4 lectures.
