A topical and chronological historical survey of China and Japan. The course will introduce the philosophies, religions, cultures, and social patterns of China and Japan. Western intrusion (missionaries, trading companies, military personnel) into Asia, and the Asians' reactions to the West are included in this class. Other areas of Asia, including India, Korea, and Southeast Asia will be integrated into the class lectures and reading assignments.
