The African- American experience reflected in the development of African-American literature. The course relates African-American writing to its social and cultural conditions, exploring recurrent, characteristic themes, techniques, and genres from slavery to present. Emphasis on such writers as Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, and contemporaries. PREREQ: ENGL 102.
