(Not open to native speakers of Spanish; assumes no prior knowledge of Spanish. Students with prior experience in the Spanish language should take a placement test to assess appropriate level.) A basic foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Spanish culture, history, current events, and geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing. Focus is on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate with native Spanish speakers orally and in writing at an elementary level. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: SPAN 101 or SPAN 111.
