The course examines the films of major directors contributing to the rise of "New Chinese Cinema" in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong since the mid-1980s.Emphasis is on individual directors' distinctive aesthetics and philosophy in the specific cultural-historical context of film production and reception.Students will study how these films represent history and memory, the relationship between individual and society, woman and gender, and how such films participate in the cultural imagination of China and Chineseness in the global context.The goal will be development of a basic film-critical vocabulary.All films have subtitles, and readings are in Engli sh.This course meets the world diversity requiremen t.
