It is designed to familiarize students with a variety of childhood disabilities, disorders and developmental delays, and how therapeutic recreation can enhance functional capacities, health, wellbeing and quality of life. The course covers theories, principles and strategies used in designing, managing and implementing therapeutic recreation programs. As a service learning course, the students devote their time and talent to serving children who have special needs due to disabilities, disorders and disadvantages. The volunteer experience, along with reflective journaling and seminar discussions, intends to promote understanding and empathy for children and their families who may differ from the student in regards to physical and mental abilities, cultural background and socio-economic status.
