Study of some major historical documents and theoretical statements in history of literary criticism, including works by such writers as Plato, Aristotle, Horace, Sidney, Dryden, Johnson, Kant, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Arnold, James, Croce, and T.S. Eliot, with emphasis on major critical positions posed and developed by these writers, basis of their theoretical positions, and practical consequences of those positions. Possible discussion of recent trends in criticism. P/NP or letter grading.
