Introductory survey of 20th-century black American literature from New Negro Movement of post-World War I period to 1960s, including oral materials (ballads, blues, speeches) and fiction, poetry, and essays by authors such as Jean Toomer, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Ann Petry, James Baldwin, and Ralph Ellison. P/NP or letter grading.
