African cultural heritage, the Atlantic slave trade, resistance to slavery and its condition, reconstruction and segregation, urban migration, and the post-slavery freedom struggle are studied. Emphasis is placed on the development of African-American culture through social struggle, and the impact on political U.S. institutions.
