LOTT 2340 - Microwave Fundamentals

Institution:
Eastfield College
Subject:
Electronic Telecommunications
Description:
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: CETT 1429. This course is an introduction to microwave theory and applications, transmitter and receiver. The student will state the principles of operation and demonstrate the proper, safe operation of microwave signal sources: reflex klystron, backward wave oscillator (BWO), traveling wave tube (TWT), magnetron, gunn effect device, and impact diode. The student will demonstrate the use of various types of measurement devices including but not limited to: microwave power meters, voltage standing wave radio (VSWR) meters, slotted lines, frequency meters, and attenuators. The student will perform the calculation and conversion of measured values to a useful form; and verify through calculations and measurements characteristics of a transmission line and a transmission load. The student will demonstrate theory and use of the following waveguide and coaxial components given ZO and ZL: hybrid junctions, attenuators, detectors, modulators, matching stubs, and directional couplers. The student will state the principles of operation of microwave antennas, phased arrays, and lenses; and state the operating principles of the following terms: time domain reflectometer (TDR), multiplexing, and pulsed radar.
