This course presents an overview of the advanced levels of urban and scientific development before 1492. Changes in the continent's linkages to the world market led to the destruction of peoples and local economies, and greatly modified the many cultures during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The rise of domestic economies and "Latino" social classes and their contradictory relations tothe emerging nation-states are illustrated by historical and contemporary case studies. Offered every semester. Prerequisite: EC II.
