A survey of literature produced in and around the British Isles between the 8th and 15th centuries of the Common Era. Anglo-Saxon and other early medieval selections presented in translation although the course includes instruction in rudimentary Old English. Middle English works (excluding Chaucer) presented in the original. Primary texts historicized and contextualized through secondary readings in history, ethnography, the arts, criticism. Prerequisite: C or better in ENGL 102 or 103. Three hours per week with enhancement. Meets General Education IB (Prior to Fall 2008: IA).
