A study of the history of jazz from its origins in the early 20th century to the present day. This course traces its development through various styles including Dixieland, swing, bop, modal, free-jazz, and fusion. Satisfies an elective in the music minor. Course meets three lecture hours per week. Fundamental music reading skills recommended. Concert attendance outside of class may be required.
