This course is an introductory study of the nature and capabilities of musical instruments through written exercises, listening, demonstration and analysis of techniques employed in representative scores from standard instrumental repertoire. Particular attention is paid to instrument characteristics, timbre, balance, articulation, texture and proper notation/scoring for large and small ensembles. Outside concert attendance and lab work is required. Course meets three lecture hours per week. Course offered every other year. Prerequisite: MUS332.
