A linguistic introduction to the Romance family of languages, which includes Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, tracing their evolution from Latin. After an introduction to linguistic concepts and sub-fields, this course follows primarily a historical and comparative approach tracing the development of the Romance languages. In addition, this course looks at larger issues, such as linguistic classification and typology, language change, language variation, dialectology, language standardization, and creolization, as they relate to the evolution of the Romance languages. Prerequisite: Intermediate to advanced knowledge of a Romance language or Latin. Previous experience in the field of linguistics is desirable but not required.
