A survey of journalistic styles in writing, focusing on the interactions between journalism and literature, as, for example, the relationship between periodical journalism and Addison's essays, or Boswell's influence on the writing of popular profiles. Attention will also be paid to reading current journalistic pieces in a literary context - reviews, plus critical, social, political, ethical, and legal commentary. Writing assignments, including work for The Log and other campus publications may be both practical and analytical. Three lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: ENG102, ENG103 or ENG106H.
