This course is an introduction to Caribbean literature written in English with emphasis on the contemporary period. Readings are in all literary genres and include such writers as Derek Walcott, Edward K. Brathwaite, V.S. and Shiva Naipaul, Edgar Mittelholzer, Sam Selvon, George Lamming, Jean Rhys, Merle Hodge, Jamaica Kincaid, Errol John, Earl Lovelace, Zee Edgell and Olive Senior. Attention is given to the development of distinctively Caribbean techniques and themes. Three lecture hours per week. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: ENG102, ENG102E, ENG103, or ENG106H.
