(Also PHL 354) Addresses the relationships between religion and society and examines how religion is defi ned across many cultures. Th e course also considers the roles of myths, rituals, symbols, and religious experiences as they are expressed in diff erent societies. What role does religion play in replicating social norms and what role does it play in bringing about social change? We will look at large-scale religious belief systems such as Buddhism and Christianity as well as small-scale societies where shamans are the traditional religious leaders. As needed.
