3 credits In an increasingly global society, the ability to communicate with people of other cultures is essential. In this class students will study and apply principles of intercultural communication, including the role of disclosure, nonverbal communication, language, context, cultural identity, and perception. Students will also understand obstacles to effective intercultural communication, including bias, uncertainty avoidance and differing coding practices. Throughout the course, students will study particular cultures and subcultures in order to appreciate their unique styles of communication. Prerequisites: SPH 1004A or junior or senior standing, or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010
