3 credits A course in the grammatical structure and usage of Standard English, as written and spoken today, and an overview of the history of the English language. The first half of the course covers the historical/ linguistic ori gins of English; the development of and changes in the English language, from its roots in Old English through the Middle English of Chaucer and the Early Modern English of Shakespeare; the development of standards of "correctness" in the 18th Century; and, thegrowth and development of American English today. The second half of the course covers contempo rary Standard English grammar, usage, punctuation and mechanics, with attention to writing techniques. Prerequisite: ENG 1001A. Offered: 2008 - 2010.
