3 credits An examination of modern Middle Eastern history, focusing on the 20th century to present day. Emphasis will be placed on how indigenous actors have shaped the region's history, even in the face of "Great Power?olitics and interventions. Particular attention will be placed on the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the two world wars, the Israeli-Arab conflict, the Cold War, the growth of modern Islamic Fundamentalism, and the recent wars that have afflicted the Persian Gulf region. Prerequisite: Any 3 credits in History, or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.
