3 credits An investigation of the ways of life of historically recent and remote hunters and gatherers, with a focus on the !Kung of southern Africa. Through a case study of the !Kung this course addresses such crucial issues as whether hunters and gatherers lacked property and central authority, and maintained a society based upon sharing and the equal sta tus of all, including equality between men and women. The course ends with an analysis of the relevance of hunters or gatherers to our under standing of the nature of human evolution. Offered: Upon request.
