A methods course building upon the foundation laid in Language Arts and Reading I. It familiarizes elementary (including early childhood K-3) and middle grade educators with the current information about the process of teaching reading through a balanced approach. Students will explore instructional approaches including direct instruction teaching strategies such as systematic phonics instruction and mini-lessons on reading strategies, shared reading, guided reading, literature groups, as well as different management strategies for setting up an effective reading program. Children's and adolescents' literature is reviewed as to its application forteaching reading. Emphasis will be placed on implementing state and national reading and language arts standards. Prerequisite: EDU 211 and 311, or permission.
